Term life and whole life are built for different durations and budgets. Begin with the financial need the death benefit would address and how long that need is expected to last. Comparing only the policy's name or the first premium hides important differences.
Ask for written illustrations and a distinction between guaranteed and non-guaranteed values. A policy should remain affordable through the period you intend to keep it; an ambitious benefit that cannot be maintained may not accomplish its purpose.
Match duration to the obligation
A mortgage, years of dependent support, and a temporary income-replacement need have timelines. A permanent obligation may require a different discussion. Term coverage is designed for a specified period. Whole life is designed for long-term protection subject to premium payments and the contract's provisions. State the need before comparing products.
Compare the full premium schedule
Ask how long premiums are guaranteed, what happens after a level period, and whether payments change. Compare the same death benefit, underwriting assumptions, and payment frequency. A small initial payment is not enough information if later payments differ substantially.
Understand cash value and policy access
A whole-life illustration may show cash values and other features. Ask which amounts are guaranteed, how surrender charges affect an early exit, and how a loan or withdrawal can affect the death benefit and policy continuation. Do not treat illustrated growth as a promise unless it is explicitly guaranteed.
Examine conversion and renewal options
A term policy may offer a conversion option subject to deadlines, eligible products, and other conditions. Ask when that option ends and how pricing is determined. Renewal after the initial period may be available at a substantially different cost. Put those dates in your records rather than assuming indefinite access at the original price.
Avoid gaps when replacing coverage
Compare an existing contract before surrendering it. New underwriting, a new contestability period, surrender costs, and the loss of older guarantees can matter. Confirm replacement coverage is in force and obtain qualified guidance where needed. A sales illustration alone is not a reason to discard a functioning policy.
Questions readers ask
Is whole life automatically a better investment?
No. Insurance and investment features must be evaluated with costs, guarantees, access restrictions, and your circumstances in mind.
Can term insurance have cash value?
Standard term protection generally does not accumulate cash value. Read any unusual product feature separately rather than assuming it works like whole life.
